Tinubu Sends State Police Constitutional Amendment Bill to Senate
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted a constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police to the Senate for consideration.
The proposed legislation, which is aimed at creating state-controlled police formations across the country, is expected to be debated by lawmakers during plenary on Wednesday.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, disclosed the development, stating that the upper chamber would consider the constitutional amendment bill tomorrow.
According to Akpabio, state governments have also indicated their readiness to act swiftly on the proposal once it is transmitted to them. He noted that the states have promised to consider the state police bill on the same day they receive it from the National Assembly.
The move marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture, with proponents arguing that state police would improve grassroots security and enhance the ability of states to tackle local security challenges.
The constitutional amendment bill is expected to generate extensive debate among lawmakers and stakeholders as the country continues to explore measures to strengthen security and policing nationwide.

Aboderin has received several honours, including the Osun State Government Award for Dedicated Service in 2021 and the Overall Best Civil Servant Award in Osun State in 2022.
An accomplished reporter, presenter, and editor, he holds B.Sc., Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He is happily married with children.
