Godwin Enakhena Named in NPFL Commercial Reforms Committee
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has taken a significant step towards strengthening its commercial structure with the appointment of respected sports administrator and media executive Godwin Enakhena as Secretary of its newly inaugurated Committee on Commercial Reforms.
The committee, which also includes Alhassan Yakmut as Chairman and Nelson Ine among its members, was formally ratified on Saturday during a high-level strategic meeting in Abuja convened by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The meeting brought together the NPFL Board, chairmen of league clubs and general managers to outline key reforms aimed at repositioning the domestic top-flight league as a more commercially attractive and financially sustainable competition.
Enakhena’s appointment reflects his extensive experience across sports journalism, football administration, sports marketing and commercial development. The NPFL Board noted that his wealth of experience and understanding of the Nigerian sports industry would play a crucial role in driving the committee’s objectives and coordinating its activities.
The committee has been tasked with overhauling the league’s commercial framework by reviewing existing sponsorship, marketing and revenue-generation structures while identifying opportunities for growth. It is also expected to develop strategies to enhance sponsorship value, improve broadcast and digital media rights, expand merchandising opportunities and strengthen the league’s commercial assets.
In addition, the committee will recommend innovative fan engagement initiatives designed to increase the visibility and marketability of the NPFL brand. It will also study successful commercial models adopted by leading football leagues across the world and recommend practical reforms that can be adapted to the Nigerian football ecosystem.
A major aspect of the committee’s assignment is to propose institutional and policy reforms that will professionalise the league’s commercial operations and reduce its dependence on external funding sources.
The committee has been given a three-week deadline to submit a comprehensive report containing practical and actionable recommendations to the NPFL Board.
Other members of the committee include Danladi Ibrahim, Taiwo Salami and Davidson Owumi.
The NPFL Board expressed confidence that the committee’s collective expertise would help drive a new era of commercial growth, improve the league’s competitiveness and position the NPFL among the leading football leagues on the African continent.
He joined the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) in 1993 as a Transmission Director/Cameraman and has grown to become one of the organisation's leading news and media personalities.
He is a former two-term Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State Chapter, and served as Honorary Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, from 2023 to 2026 before being elected Chairman of the Council in February 2026.
Aboderin has received several honours, including the Osun State Government Award for Dedicated Service in 2021 and the Overall Best Civil Servant Award in Osun State in 2022.
An accomplished reporter, presenter, and editor, he holds B.Sc., Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He is happily married with children.
